I've yet to write a hill billy shuffle like song. Until now! Inspiration struck and I realized that I'm a stud. AND I'm in love. Well, seriously folks, when you feel good and you're feeling good you should sing it. And so this little ditty evolved. I tried singing it regular voice like. But it just wasn't working. Are you self concsious about your hair? Lord knows I have been through the years. From bushy little boy, to long on the sides, to new wave 80's, to that "body wave" perm I'll always regret. Anyhow, I couldn't help but notice on all the young men how long hair is back. Mainly long hair on the sides of the head, over the ears. All shaggy like. Like when I was in school a few years ago. (ha ha). So what better to write a song about?! Pavement had their hit song Cut Your Hair (that was it wasn't it) back in the 90s. The Judybats had "All I Wanna do is F**& Your Hair". And now, DSazster has: LONG HAIR IS BACK! Enjoy it my friends, enjoy it.!

This song is the result of another conversation I had this week with an associate. She said "it's got walls but no ceiling". Eureka! The phrase was like lightning to my brain as excellent song material. (it often happens like this folks, where I hear a combination of words and my brain goes COOL WORDS - USE IN SONG). So I sat down to write it and it became a song about having safety and security, but also the ability to expand one's horizons. Kind of like parents who take care of you and also encourage you to follow your dreams, or a mate who you're totally in sync with but allows you to also follow your goals. Make sense? I think it could also be interpretted as God in away, too. The safety and support of God. The recording is heavy on vocals and harmonies for a change. Sounds pretty decent I think.

Happy 10th Birthday to Shut Eye Records

Although I wasn't able to attend the official party I wanna say Happy 10th Birthday to Pete Knapp and his Atlanta record label Shut Eye Records. Pete and the label were an intergal part of the Atomsplit machine for a few years. In fact, Pete played bass in the band for awhile and is on the Microstar record.

A Sometimes when I sit down to write the lyrics to these little ditties I just get in a stream-of-consciousness mode where all these little thoughts that have been on my mind or in my crazy dreams just comes out as lyrics. That's the case with this one. Started out as a relationship song but then the verses took on a strange poetic life of their own. Speaking to physical ailments among other things. So, I suppose the underlying theme of this one is bad love, babies, bad love.

A I put the pretension aside this week for a thoughtful piece called "Old Rockers, New Records". Have you happened to notice how a number of "classic" old rockers are putting out new records these days. Like Bob Segar, Tom Petty, Robert Plant, etc. Thing is the radio won't play them. They play the old safe music these folks made 20-30 years ago. Just plain frustrating. Maybe there is a satellite station or something that plays them? I guess you are just supposed to buy or download the music and enjoy it on your own.

Anyhow, this simple song is noting all this. Also, a great 7 inch verison of "Millisent" on this show.

This week you get a full production demo. The tune is called "Trick of Time" and it's got a nice big chorus lyric of "We all fall down" that speaks to being hopeful after being let down. The kernel of this tune goes back many many years musically to early work with my songwriting cousin Jeremey in Tampa Bay. The riff was always one of my favorites but the song never got finished or recorded. So, I thought I'd get it out, dust it off, and finish it up for fun. It's very ,a Cure like with the driving drum beat. But the chorus not so much.

ALSO! The Podcast contains a super special rarity! A live acoustic version of "Melt With You" covered by Atomsplit in Borders boodkstore in Athens, GA in 2002. This alone is worth the price of admission folks!

This week you get a sensitive little number I decided to call "Thick2Thin". The weird spelling be yet another homage to Prince. The song speaks to the dilution of a relationship through time. Typically early on you might call one "thick". But then as time takes it's toll. And reality takes it toll. And the Law of Rhythm takes it toll. Etc, etc, etc. You become "thin". You all know what I'm talking about. Think about how many "dead friends" you have out there. Such is the way I suppose. For the earth is slow, but the oxen....the oxen are patient. Well well well, it's episode 26! Half way through the mission. This is the 26th "song" written and podcasted with commentary. A lot of pressure was on me to come up with something good for this landmark episode. But where could I look for inspiration? Then it hit me. My beloved Mr. Fantastic strech action figure. And all the bizzar situations I've photographed him in over the few months. (along with my creative Uncle Charlie's help!). So, I've been wanting to create a video using all these weird photos I've shot - one day at a time- but I realized I needed a song to do it. So I put together the "stretch" idea with Love. You fall in love and you wonder "will it last a lifetime". Well, at least I do. So that my dear friends is the inspiration for this song. It ended up being slightly dancy and programy. And funny I think. Video to follow.... and enjoy.

Spent the long weekend in the Big Apple. NYC people. Wasn't allll that great but as it becomes a memory it becomes fond. Anyhow, I managed to carry my un-trusty iMac laptop into the heart of Times Square to do some audio recording of the experience. Then I also did some recording of the environment in Union Square and a club crowd. I mixed all the audio together and added a funky walking like drum beat. (I did a lot of walking!) Then I added a 5 different "stock" bass garageband tracks. Not just any bass track but "southern" bass. On account of me being from the South. The end result is not a song per se, but a "piece". A experimental environmental sound scape if you will. You hear the sirens, the crowds, etc. Enjoy it for what it is. Oh, did I mention there are no lyrics!

This week's new tune is posted to the site (Podcast RSS update soon). It's called "Turn To Tan" and was recorded on my visit here to Silicon Valley California. I've been out here learning how to conquer your world from Tim Sweeney. Some nice days afternoon by the pool got a slight sun burn in the awesome weather out here. But I've heard on SOME people it turns to tan. So this is a "conversational" song about that. It's a lot of fun. And a bit different piece than I've posted before. Enjoy!

Ah, another slow song. Another bittersweet one. Somewhat about the "growing pains" of love and relationships. I really like the Chorus on this one. It's a simple live sounding recording with gentle singing. My Goodness, am I becoming a folk singer?

Recorded early in the morning. With the coffee shakes. I'm probably one of like 5 songwriters who likes to record before 10AM. Funny.

"she can't help"

This past week found me fighting with a sore throat and working 12 hour days. Yet I still found time to pen this week’s heartbreaker. Sure, it was 3AM last night when I finished the lyrics. But hey? Who says insomnia can’t be a productive?

This is a slow song. A bittersweet song I think. (are you noticing a theme in my work yet?). It’s called She Can’t Help. A song who’s lyrics are describing someone. Maybe someone like someone you know. A lonely heart. The verses are speaking of her. Then the chorus does the same by tries to pull an ounce of hope into the situation. And the bridge is the narrator’s plea of involvement. I guess you could call it a ballad. But it’s not a lovey dovey one. It’s a tough one. This song may require a second listening to sink in.

I decided to go back to simplicty recording this week. The gentle acoustic progression that came out made that seem appropriate. At first I tried the usual techniquue of singing directly in the unidircectional mic and guitar direct. But it didn’t really carry the emotion of this one. So i switched to my omini-directional mic just recording a performance. ( I think this is Take 12 or 14)

Also on this week's show is The Inklings "Starlight" - a beautiful almost country like song off of our old "Room On Venus" CD.

Have you ever met someone you were attracted too and you hit off, right off the bat? But you haven't got to know them all that well yet. So you keep hoping and questioning in your mind whether they have all the things you desire. That's what this song is about. From the male's point of view. But it could just as easily be the female's point of view.

It's rare when those things you desire end up being there. Rare, but it does happen. Enjoy this one.

A little rough on the recording but the idea and feeling is there. I tend to paint with broad strokes. And this song is a no exception.

I suppose you either love Valentines Day or you hate it. I've had some very memorable ones and some very forgetful ones. This year was kind of inbetween.

So I got up early the Sunday before Vday and it was snowing (very lightly) here in Atlanta. Looking out the window with my acoustic and playing around with an old Rome in A Day progression I came up with this bittersweet love song.

This song is about having faith that there is Valentine out there for you but he or she is not quite there yet. Maybe you met her and haven't quite sealed the deal but you hope too. Maybe it's someone from your past you're no longer with. Ah, love and angst. I love it. Also on this week's show is Atomsplit's "Daybreak" - a fun fooling around love song.

To MySpace or NOT to Myspace

I've been battling within on whether to go ahead and build a myspace page for myself. I used to have one as the band Atomsplit. But ace guitarist Cory Orlando inherited it. He spent a lot of time getting friends on it and took it over. So I'd have to start over. I went ahead and reassigned and reregistered the name just in case.

I'm not sure if I can make it in the myspace world though. I look totally like a drag queen with eyeliner on. So I don't know what I'd use for my photo. I do have some weird ones of course. Maybe those would work.

I got a email newsletter a few days ago from from huge cd maker conglomerate DiscMakers about how everybody HAS to have a myspace page. Especially bands. So I started to rethink it. Even hollywood actors and brands and companies have one now.

Of course then it seems like why bother. With sooooo much clutter on there. Why be a grain of sand on the planet Tattonie?

I never owned parachute pantseither.

And I didn't buy Nirvana's hit album until 1999.

We'll see. If I go ahead and move forward with the page, I'll post it here.

YouTube Atomsplit Video "SO OVER YOU"

Just in time for Valentines Day I've started a YouTube account and posted the SO OVER YOU video there for the world to see. Click here and watch it again! So far it's had 7 hits! (i'm being sarcastic). And I was two of them! Ah well, so the song is much better than the Video. But the video is fun. Original Atomsplit bassist Hawkins and I made it in my basement one day after a trip to ToysRUs to buy the figures. When I saw the Sum41 video with the action figures years later I was like...AH! I did it first. Of course, I didn't have the budget to buy ALL those figures they used. It was fun at the time. The live footage in the video is from a gig at the old Chameleon Club in Atlanta. Jason Colby on guitar and John P on the drums. I think I edited this thing down in an alod version of Adobe Premiere. (I was a quicktime 1.0 user!)

New Song Up: "Wanna StayByYourSide"

I wasn't really sure what the heck I was gonna do until this morning. I took a shower and jumped up in bed with a towel on and my acoustic guitar. Then this melody and lyric revealed itself to me. I had a few other things I was working on over the course of the week, but wasn't really satisfied with them. So a hot shower did me good evidently. (usually I take just a cold shower)
Set out to work at at and finished about 12 hours later. It's the first time I've sung an entire song in falsetto! Goash, I didn't know I had it in me. It seems like a mix of Love and Rockets, Prince, Fine Young Canibals, The Cure, Chumbawunda, and I don't know what else. But I think it's cool.

A slow, groovy, sexy song. It's about not wanting to leave your girlfriend's or boyfriend's (whatever th case may be) side. They are simple, yet slightly clever I hope, lyics. Sometimes the kiss principal is the best. Especially in songwriting. Also on this week's show is Atomsplit's "Quicksand".

I had my collard greens, cornbread and black eyed peas yesterday so I'm hoping for a good year. Also hoping to make some improvements in life. You?

We all make resolutions this time of year. A lot of us have the same ones. Like eating better, being nicer and losing weight. So I couldn't resist but to make this weeks song about it.

Well it's kinda after the fact, but it's still pretty darn cool. Written by Yours Truely. Mike Dyson was the Artist and Colorist. And Stephen Bridges was the Flash Animation Master. The clip features the original prototype Atomsplit characters based on the 2004-05 band members. The ones on the cover of the EP3K CD.
